A No of AR units have been op in the state of Manipur with 4 AR being located at Kangla Fort , Imphal since Mar 1915. All units of AR in Manipur were administered by HQ IGAR(N) from Nagaland and were placed under comd various army fmns from time to time.A need was felt to raise a HQ to control and administer AR units located in the state of Manipur.
Consequently, HQ IGAR (S) was authorised to be raised at Imphal vide MHA letter No II.13015/B/96/PF.IV dt 26 Aug 03. HQ IGAR(S) had the unique distinction of being raised at the historic Kangla Fort which has been an imp political and religious centre of Manipur through the centuries.The raising was completed on 15 Sep 04.Maj Gen BS Ghotra, AVSM, SM, VSM assumed comd of HQ IGAR (S) as its first IG .
HQ IGAR (S) was relocated at Mantripukhri on handing over of Kangla Fort to the State Govt on 20 Nov 04. The HQ was assigned the adm resp of all AR Sects and units in Manipur on 29 Jul 04. The HQ became op wef 01 Jan 05 and assumed op control of North Manipur with HQ 9 Sect, 10 Sect & 27 Sect being placed under comd. Subsequently, 26 Sect was placed under op control of this HQ wef 19 Sep 05. HQ 27 Sect mov to Churachandpur on 15 Mar 06 and has since been placed under op cont of HQ 57 Mtn Div.
The fmn is presently being commanded by Maj Gen C A Krishnan .
